Story
Context
Humanoid, a London-based robotics company and one of the fastest-growing startups in the field, partnered with TOGETHER WITH YOU to define how Alpha, its flagship general-purpose robot, should communicate with people. Alpha is built to work next to humans, not behind glass. For that to feel safe, anyone nearby has to read the robot in a second or two: working, stuck, or about to need help. The robot has few ways to make itself understood. A small body-mounted screen, a voice, and a Dashboard interface. Each channel has to be precise about what it says and when it says it.

When a humanoid robot has a screen, the first instinct is to draw a face. Eyes that blink, follow, and react feel like the shortest path to readability, because people learn to read faces long before they learn to read words. But a face is never just a display. It implies attention, intention, and the expectation of social behaviour. Before designing a single expression, we had to decide what kind of relationship this machine should imply, and what kind it must not.
Concept
What exactly is wrong with anthropomorphism? Nothing, until the eyes start carrying meanings the robot cannot back up.

A drawn eye implies a will behind it, something that wants a thing from you. An eye pointed at a person reads as observation, and here honesty matters more than comfort: Alpha does see. It has cameras, and pretending otherwise would be its own kind of lie. The point is not to hide that the robot perceives its surroundings, but to stop dramatizing it. A rendered gaze turns a technical fact into a social performance.

And a face signs a contract. Look at me like a person, and I will expect you to behave like one. The robot breaks that contract within the first exchange, every time, because there is no person behind the eyes. A stylized eye can be charming on a desk toy. On a full-size machine sharing your workspace, it slides toward the unsettling: familiar enough to trigger recognition, wrong enough to keep you on guard.

Predictability over Anthropomorphism
With the screen mounted in the middle of the robot's head, the anthropomorphic reading cannot be erased entirely. So we split the problem in two: abstract on the sensory level, strictly predictable on the functional one.

The screen shows an organically moving dotted pattern. It is not a window into the machine's mind. It is a signal of presence: alive, working. The motion says a process is running, and it does not pretend to explain which one.

Predictability comes from a fixed rule: one state, one picture. The pattern never improvises. The same condition always produces the same image, so after a day of working next to Alpha, a person stops interpreting the screen and starts recognizing it.
The resting state has one job and one line of defence. It should read as alive and busy. It should never read as watching you.
Style
The visual language sits where Humanoid itself sits: between an engineered system and an organic presence. We did not try to resolve that tension. We built the aesthetics of the HRI and the Dashboard on top of it.

A poetic way to visualize a functional process
The dotted pattern moves in an abstract, organic way. It borrows the rhythm of thinking, not the appearance of a thinker. That line is deliberate and we held it everywhere: rhythm invites calm, while a face invites expectations the robot cannot meet. The pattern may remind you of a process unfolding. It never claims there is a mind behind it.

Straightforward, clear communication style
Where the pattern is allowed to be ambient, the words are not. The pattern gives the system flexibility to transform and adapt, but it has to stay readable at a glance and from across the room. Colour and copy carry that load, and both are deliberately blunt. When a robot needs to reach a human, it gets a second or two of attention, not a paragraph. A harsh message that lands beats a polite one that doesn't.
Vision
We never intended the small screen to carry the whole relationship between a robot and a person. A face-mounted HRI can create presence and show immediate status, but it cannot interrupt someone who is not looking, hold a dialogue, or explain a technical fault. For the system to stay calm and readable, each channel needed exactly one job.

The robot reaches a person through three channels: the HRI for presence and immediate status, voice and sound for escalation and dialogue, and the Dashboard for diagnostics and control. The person reaches the robot through two: voice for commands and conversation, and the Dashboard for deeper work with the system. The body reports state. The voice initiates contact. The Dashboard gives control.

Designed escalation
By default, the robot is quiet. When everything is fine, it simply does its job, and the screen stays a background presence. This restraint is deliberate. Human attention is a finite resource, and a tool should not spend it without reason.

Escalation is the exception, and it is graded rather than binary. Between "everything is fine" and "help is needed" there is a middle state: something is off, but the robot is still managing. The system moves up a three-step ladder, from background to attention to requires help, spending exactly as much of a person's attention as the problem is worth. The visual language sharpens, the task recedes, and the message shifts from "I am working" to "I need assistance". One alarm for every problem would train people to ignore alarms. Proportion is what keeps the signal trustworthy.

Voice and sound
The screen has an obvious limit: it is small, and brightness only works on someone who is already looking. It can support a message. It cannot guarantee attention.

The channel that actually breaks the calm state is voice. Voice reaches a person who is turned away, busy, or across the room. The screen then reinforces what the voice initiated. First the sound turns your head, then the screen confirms what you heard.

The Dashboard & Technical States
The HRI answers one question: is it alive, and is everything calm. The Dashboard answers another: what exactly is wrong, where, and what should be done about it. Feeling and presence on one screen, facts and action on the other.

These two must not be mixed, because mixing them fails in one of two ways. Either you get an anxious ambient display that flickers with data and never lets you rest, or a decorative dashboard where status drowns in beautiful animation. Separating expression from information is a condition for readability, not a matter of taste.

Outro
The robot becomes easier to trust because it is honest about what it is, not because it acts like a person. It sees, and doesn't perform seeing. It stays calm while it can, asks for attention only when it must, and never implies a relationship it cannot sustain.

The approach is now scaling with the company. Humanoid, backed by $50 million in founder-led capital, has since signed a phased agreement with Schaeffler to deploy thousands of its robots across manufacturing plants, one of the largest disclosed rollouts in the industry. The first systems go live in Germany in 2026.

A robot that does not look at you can be easier to read than one that does.
